Needs a new water pump?

Wow.. i'm on this technical section too much :/

But yeah as the title says, when I was driving my car home yesterday (New 2001 Z28) it over heated out of no where after driving 50 exits on the parkway, coolant all over the engine but not enough to suggest a hose leak (I never saw any hose leak). There was low coolant (not the light) and I filled it up with water, nothing leaked out but the car still over heated after driving like a mile. Assuming the water pump is finished.. any other options like a thermostat or something that can cause this or is this definitely a water pump failure?

If there is external coolant visible, you have to pressure test the system and find the leak. You can pop the cap off with the car running too and see if coolant is recirculating back into the radiator. I believe the ls1's are like the lt1's and the coolant will enter the radiator at the port by the cap. You might need to remove a little bit of fluid so you can actually see whether or not it is flowing in.

If you just got this car I would go see if the seller will do something for you.

Hmm... well, take the belt off see if there is any lateral play in the water pump itself.

Thermostat could be stuck closed - but dont normally happen to these cars.

Are your fans coming on?

BullittSVT 08-21-2011 11:44 AM

Yeah the fans come on, and there is a loud squeaking noise, assuming its the serpentine belt but could it be the water pump making that noise?

SRGN 08-21-2011 12:34 PM

Remove the belt and see if any of the accessories, water pump, or idler/tensioner pulleys are making noise or binding on their own. If anything driven by the belt has too much resistance it will prevent everything driven by the belt from being turned at the proper speed including the water pump. Do what Chris said, check the water pump for radial and in/out play, and see if it binds up at all when you apply force to it from the side and try to turn it.

Could very well be the water pump... Miles on car ?

BullittSVT 08-21-2011 10:52 PM

120,000 on the odometer.

did you find the problem? if not i have a pressure tester its easy enough to check.
