whining after the storm

Hey guys,

I had to drive on Saturday night in Irene. I drove through some big puddles and stuff and now my car is making a whining noise. Seems to be coming from the front end and in sync with the RPM level. Otherwise the car seems to be running fine.

I don't think its the power steering because it doesn't change pitch when i turn the wheel.

any ideas? hasn't gotten better since..

in for an answer...mine is doing something similar

Belt or tensioner. I would pull the belt off and start spinning the accessories. You could also spray some wd40 or something similar to see if the noise stops. If it does, I would replace the belt. The ls1's are notorious for having a squeaky a/c belt, its separate from the main serpentine belt.

that's what my dad said about the belts but he hasn't heard it in person. Its a whining noise not alike a squealing noise.. ill do that tho... i know i don't want to get any lubricant on the belts.

just annoying doesn't seem to be hurting the performance..

Could be a bearing then. Does it matter if the ac is on or not?

ls1 alternators are down low.... if its whining not squealing that coulda gotten wet

The AC belt definitely makes some noise so start by removing that to see if it goes away.

If water got into the bearing area of the alternator I'm pretty sure it won't dry out - eventually it'll need replaced. Lots of guys that wheel Jeep Cherokees have the same issue since the alt. is down low on those trucks as well - deep mudholes = dead alt. :)
