What has the longest it has taken you to do a fuel pump?
I'm curious. It took me 2.5 hours today to do one in a 91 TA. The fastest I've done one is in 1.5 hours with a help of a buddy that knows these cars just about as well as I do.
The main reason for the speed of me doing a fuel pump replacement has come from replacing them in my cars and fiends cars over the years. It more or less as become a joke amongst ourselves of replacing the pump the correct way vs the hacking way (cutting a hole in the floor) |
with help its not that bad doing it the correct way

Does this exclude mechanical fuel pump on a 83 z?

I usually just swing the rear forward, bang off the over axle pipe, and drop the tank till it hits the rear. Then I stuff my head and arms in a small area and remove the sending unit the only angle it comes out. Not really sure how long it takes but it seems to be relatively quick.
My floor is solid too :) |
I did it that way once. I'm just a bit to big to fit up in there to do it that way. lol So I take the tank out all the way.

Ive never cut a hole in the floor but I did buy a truck that the PO did that and I have to say by the time you measure carefully where the hole needs to be, cut carefully to not clip fuel lines, and then figure out how to patch it up it takes way longer than doing it the right way.

not having access to a lift and working on a creeper was hte big problem for me. i did the one in my brothers 87 GTA in about 5 hours.. and then a year later when it was time to do the one in my 87 iroc... i had it down to about 3.5 hours. i learned that it helps if the fuel tank has been drained, and to get the car extrrra high in the air so you can manuver the filler neck part easily. did not wish to cut holes in the trunk floor. thats a butcher job. dropped the tank both times.

1 hour with hand tools done the correct way and 1/2 hour with cutting a hole in the floor,

this topic would be a lot more interesting if "o a fuel p" was missing
