wont shift

My 88 camaro with a 2.8l won't shift into third or fourth. it barely shifts into second. I am broke and can't afford a new transmission and my trans am isn't done yet. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

Auto trans shift by pressure actuated by fluid and a series of springs. You could have a torque converter issue but check the basics first, i.e. trans fluid when trans is warm. Is it pinkish? Filled? Does it have a burnt smell to it? Even if it's not pink, it doesn't mean its necessarily dirty, just older. Its very easy to drop the pan on a 700r4 and replace filter, which solves a lot of issues and is normally neglected. I did mine last summer in my r/s and it shifted 100% better and didn't 'stumble' when downshifting..like a whole new trans. 700r4's are resilant and tough. Check and get back to us.
