Project Make it work !
as you know, im swapping the LS out of my now gone Camaro into the LT1 T/A i just picked up. but obviously theres going to be problems, so i want to keep it all in one thread. this is not a built thread, but more a a problem/answer/info thread. so lets get this going...
First off, WIRING. i knew this was going to be an issue when i took the project on. theres the easy(and EXPENSIVE) way out of this issue, and thats send the harness out to have it modded. another option that i really do not want to do, its pull the dash and swap the body harness. that leaves me wondering what extent of wires need to be swapped? i also would need to purchase a harness that would work. and would it just plug and play with the T/A cluster? what i would really like to do, is find out how the wiring harness is modified, and let my pops go at it(owned and worked for own electrical company for past 30 years) modding the harness accually seems like the easiest option to me. i just dont know how to go about doing it. i really dont need A/C, cruise, ABS n airbags to work. do need all the normal stuff to work, obvi the engine, lights, power locks n windows, radio and all that stuff. Now i know Kohler posted a lot of things in the body harness thread, and ive been reading it over and it seems to have everything i need. but does anyone have pics or diagrams ? MOTOR MOUNTING: i have the whole front end from the LS car, along with the front end of the LT1(still in car) which would be more advisable to use? the LS has the better breaks, and motor will bolt right back to it. the LT1 has upgraded shocks and springs(switchable, i know) but needs some new bushings. i would need some sort of conversion mounts to use the LT1 K member, correct? so i beleive im leaning towards the LS1 Kmember. but also, Tubular has been in my head as an option. but is spending the money for that worth it? its not going to be a track car. so i dont know if its really worth the coin. TRANS MOUNTING: i think this is simple. just buy a LT1 4L60E Trans X member and use that, right ? Thanks guys |
Transmission crossmember should be the same for lt1/ls1 and t56 or 4l60e.

It is entirely silly to use an LT1 k member adapted to make an LS1 fit when you have the damn thing already. Use the LS1 in the LS1 K member, make this all run and then swap misc suspension stuff. I would get it aligned, but thats later on so don't worry bout it now. Another to potentially worry about, the LT1 shocks/springs combined with a lighter LS1 may ride the 4x4 look hard.
Wiring stuff is hard to find pics of, but I can try some more tonight for you. I am sure if you offer Adam some cliff bars he can get you the wiring diagrams of the two harnesses and you can take it from there. If you take your time you can do it, random idiots do it all the time on teh interwebz so ya. GOT THIS. |

im not concerned about the 4x4 look at all the the T/A is slammed. the front accually tucks a 17" rim with a 275 tire. what i would like to do is get diagram of the LS1 Engine Harness and were it plugs into in the LT1 and just draw my dad up a scematic on what wire to put were and what not. try to make it the easiest. do it on paper first and then lets pops go HAM with the soildering gun |
think of it this way...
all 82-02 driveshafts and tq arms are interchangeable. 4L60e was in cars from 94-02 all v8 trans mounts are the same 82-02 Therefore... I'm pretty confident saying the trans crossmember will swap between an lt1 and an ls1. |
thats what i was thinking. but what makes me thing other wise is that i have a TH350 trans mount that only works with 93-97 cars...
|
Sorry dude I think I made a mistake... deleted.
|
wait... so i do need to get a diff X-member?

I am fact checking. Sorry. Not trolling.

damn lol
there cheap anyway... found em for $20 on ebay |
Yea just use the full LS1 drivetrain and attachments. Stop making this hard fool.
What exactly are you looking for wiring pinout wise? |

I can't just search for a whole car diagram they don't exist.
You need a dash cluster wiring cluster pin out for a 96 LT1 car right? And then what the LS1 engine harness sends into that harness, right? You are not worried about BCM and that nonsense? |

Yes. not sure. |
ebay - buy a gm service manual. best $50 or so you might spend on this adventure

Would seem silly old man, quite silly. |
but has zero delay, can have in garage, etc. and not bother adam every 3.25 minutes

I have not had issues with GM service manuals. plus you can sit there at a table, look stuff up, make plans/diagrams for yourself, trouble shooting charts, etc. Very helpful for things like this.
or pay for your own all data. i've done both and sometimes the book is quite nice to have. |
You cannot beat a Gm service manual.
|
x2 on the book. Its like a roadmap, us old guys can vouch for those things.... good luck with the project!

I bought one cheap off Ebay for an '87 IROC (donor car for my TPI swap) when we built my Monte and it was most helpful. |
started to strip down the motor last night to just a shortblock. thing is a mess. massive amount of build up on the heads. and then i took the heads off, and you can move the tops of the pistons with your fingers back and forth... yeaaaaaa
|
Sounds legit.
