What I do at work
Vehicle needed bank one or right side cylidner head. Not going into details why but this is what it takes to do a head swap. The turbos are mounted in the valley on this motor. The car has 3 or 4 water pumps all together including the one mechanical pump that you might be able to see behind all the cooling hoses, for the intercoolers, power steering, oil, transmission and coolant.
This is an N63 out of a 2010 BMW 750il. It's a twin turbo V8. The table you see is freaking awesome and I will eventually use it on my own project. Cost about 16k i was told http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0096.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0097.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0101.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0103.jpg You can see the exhaust manifold in the valley on the one side that is still on, and yes the license plate had to come off to do this job http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0099.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0100.jpg http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f3...o/IMAG0102.jpg |
wow what a mess, i could neverrrrrr lol
repair bill total?? |
omggg , well at least you have all the correct tools at your disposal
Warranty. I rarely see the price on any of the jobs I do. I know an X6 M, needed a long blck and was 34k for the motor.
This head bare was 2k at our cost The car is back together running and out the shop but mentally and physically killed me that week |

looks like a big job !
what dealer is that? its doesnt happen to be park ave right ? |
No. It's Morristown.
ohh lol i was gunna say im at park ave all the time, never see your car.
Yeah I don't want to deal with rt 17 traffic
wow. what is book labor for that?
Bare head I think is 29 with no diagnosis
But to check everything, including leak down and compression is probably another 8 hrs
holy crap lol
Hmm... no longblocks?
I think I've seen your car at BMW of Morristown. I drive by there all the time.
Maybe. It's usually parked behind the building but possibly.
They wouldn't do a long block for just a head |
Damn. I guess that's why people lease these...
Looks like fun. I just did head gaskets on a northstar. Looks similar to what you just did, I think we charged him ~20 hours total. I have an engine to replace next week on an 04 SRX, book time for a long block is 27 hours. It's surprising how much money people dump into cars that aren't even worth half of the repair (both my jobs are cash. Not warranty)
Did you have to go to a specialty BMW school before getting into a dealership? I had a friend from highschool that works for BMW. He went through some factory program then got a job in Texas. Your 6th picture makes your bay look like a professional office. Our shop is straight from the 70's, we still have the old Visualine alignment rack from the 1950's. |
thats a big job
Yeah I went to BMW step (BMWS training program at the north American hq) after wyotech. Didn't have to go but I was accepted and I knew a dealer tech would be a stable job so I went for it.
Yeah that bay and the one next to it where I have the motor under the car are my bays. Every tech has the same set up too with a work bench, box, cabinets and computer. For every two techs we have our diagnostic computer as well. Pretty modern and high class. Most everything I do is warranty. If this was customer pay it would have easily been 40 hrs. So 6k in labor |
Thats just nuts. No wonder these cars depreciate so much especially after the warrenty expires.
HOLY CHIT! I would have used my vacation time when that job came in. lol
Christ...here I though my shop was big lol.
Good stuff...it's nice to see a clean shop too...it usually means the Service Manager and techs care. |
wow. I gotta hand it to you for being able to put that all back together when all is said and done. Looks like there is a ton going on there.
