I'm ready for my next GORUCK Challenge

GORUCK Boston, I'm ready for ya! Got my bricks wrapped, energy gels, headlamp, water bladder, carabiners, dry bag, and most importantly....kilt!

For those of you that don't know/don't remember what it is, here's the summary I wrote from my last GORUCK challenge. Essentially it's the worst thing you can imagine where you have a cadre (leader)..you don't know what you're going to do, where you'll finish, or when you finish. But you know it'll involve a lot of running, PT, buddy carries, and heavy logs. All while getting the best WTF looks ever from passerbys.

Or here's a video from the first challenge they ever did back in 2010. It's now much longer (distance and time), and more difficult (physically and mentally). - my last one was 12 hours and 25 miles.

What's wrong with that?

Did you sign up for NYC in Sept yet? I'm a recruiter for lack of a better term.

We've been taunting the cadre so we will surely be having some good livin'

It's not an embarassing birthday dance, CMV do not want.

No not yet. I also haven't been running or to a gym in over a year so I'm doubting my chances at going. I need Ian here yelling in my ear as motivation or nothing gets done.

Why not just join the armed forces?

Not bashing but i really don't get it.

Sign up. Knowing that you just enlisted for a gnarly challenge that your team is counting on your for should motivate you

My family would disown me. It's a safe (read: won't get killed) way to challenge yourself, and meet some of the most amazing people in this great nation. It's something very few people are willing/able to do. Despite all of this, there's a ~98% pass rate. This challenge is all mental and a true test of wills. Everything is team based. There is no individual component and no heroes.

To give you an example of the type of people that do these:

One of the alumni lost his job a while back. He has a 4 year old daughter, Charlotte, battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She's finishing up her chemo treatment and is having a few leg issues. Keep in mind the vast majority of us (there are ~1200 of us who have completed these challenges) have never met this man, or his daughter. Yet, when one guy got wind of her leg issues, he posted in the group page suggesting we donate $5 each to get her an XBOX kinect to help her out and encourage her to move. This was 3 pm. By the time I got home they had raised enough for an XBOX and a few games, and the guy posted saying to stop paypal-ing him money, instead continuing the stream of donations to Charlotte's page.

In addition, we have been having these "Brave Charlotte Mini Gorucks," which last 4-5 hours and usually cover 5-8 miles, plus PT and so on. We go around yelling "when I say brave, you say charlotte! Brave! Charlotte" and so on, trying to get donations. In order for us to participate we donate $25+. Each one of these has had half alumni, and half new people/friends. Not including the participants who gave online, last Saturday we raised over $240 at one at Valley Forge Park.

It's not just about the challenge itself, but the people you do it with. Everyone encourages each other and helps each other push beyond their physical limits.

Here is Charlotte's donation page if anyone is interested. She finishes her chemo in about a month.

Of all the mud run/obstacle course things out there this looks the toughest by far. Impressive.

Anti_Rice_Guy 03-14-2012 08:46 PM

The only thing above this is the Spartan Death Race in VT. Tough Mudder and all the others are like a 400 yard dash compared to this. However, the feeling of accomplishment that washes over the team at the end is unreal, and the battle-fed friendships are crazy. Anyone can do a Tough Mudder, albeit slowly. Doing a GORUCK is a whole other thing entirely.

I won't know if I can do it until I get back to the US.
