01 ws6 ls1 help

Hey guys I have an 01 ws6 I've been having pinging issues with. The car has 90k on it now. Stock engine with larger throttle body with true cold air with removed baffles a cat back exhaust and a predator tuner. The car has a new trans with a 2400-2600 stall anti balloon locking converter with a minor shift inprovemt kit with heavy duty clutches and bands. I recently did a tune up with Delco plugs and wires. I notice under heavy load or wide open throttle it seems like its only in closed loop. I've tried to reduce the spark advance and add fuel to the mixture but it doesn't seem to go away. Does anyone else seem to have this problem or know of a fix? I've performed a few fuel injection services and ran a top end decarbon services from BG products.

Any help would be appreciated!

Any Codes or SES light?? Might be a Mass air problem. Might want to change the Fuel filter as well if it hasnt been done already.

Changed fuel filter and I forgot I have the slp MAF upgrade... No ses light.

set the tune back to stock and see how it runs.. Might also want to unhook your battery for a while then hook it back up. I have done that on my car a couple times when it was running weird and it seems to reset everything.

Did that. And still get the ping. Added fuel and backed off on timing. Still pinged. It's odd. One above 4,000 rpm at WOT. Is there issues with low pressure at high demand? Or pressure regulator problems. I was thinking if there was a way to bump the pressure abt 4-5 lbs. or would that mess with the stock injectors?

Did this start happening after installing the converter?

are you runing 93*

MotorTrendz 04-16-2012 07:40 PM

Actually I bought the car last year with 70k on it and it has done it from day 1.

Always run 93 octane and I even added the octane booster a few times to see if t would help.

when I did a converter swap, I got a ton of false knock readings which would sometimes bump the car into limp mode. It would also come in and out of lockup at cruising speed. The fix was to set the knock readings very high in the tune. However, doing this would remove the readings of knock if you actually did have that problem. Does the car hold lockup at cruising?

MotorTrendz 04-16-2012 08:09 PM

The car holds lock up while cruising. Since the converter I get false solenoid B codes after long trips and it goes into limp mode. But that's a programming issue. I don't think it's a false knock bc I can actually hear it. "ping" and the computer doesn't seem to pick it up as a knock. I don't think it retards the timin when this happens. I tried to data record the event with my Mac mentor( I'm a dealer tech for 12 years for Chrysler) but it won't get the event. So all I can figure is its a thinning of fuel when in closed loop under high load at high rpm my short term fuel trim is less than 3% and long term is +1-2% so it's not crazy lean. I don't feel like the EGR is causing any issues and can't tell if there's and carbon buildup. But if there was it should knock under open loop as well as closed unless the spark advance is way different. I need a tuning guy to chime in if possible.

So you have been having this issue for 20,000 miles? Why bring it up now? Do you have a wideband gauge?? If I remember there were some issues with the SLP maft so maybe try a Stock one if you have one laying around..

MotorTrendz 04-16-2012 08:55 PM

I bring it up now bc I've finally reached my wits end. Lol. I've been trying to figure it out for a while now. I figured I'd ask and see if anyone locally has has or seem this issue. I do have a stock MAF to swap out to see if it changes. But I think it was doing it before I put it in.

So its been doing it before you even started to mod and tune the car? You can not fix it with adjusting the tune, and it has gotten worse over the past year? How about a Timing chain issue? I havent really heard of the LS1's having timing chain issues but kinda fits..

MotorTrendz 04-17-2012 09:15 AM

it hasnt gotten worse its the same, no matter how i tune it, yet the car has picked up power during the tuning.. but still get the ping.. i dont hear any chain slack but ill have to look into it.. thanks

Assuming you went over the basic stuff like plugs and fuel pressure? Have you had the injectors cleaned/flowed? Have you tried doing a run with fresh plugs then reading them? Try to isolate if its a cylinder or bank issues. Are you tuning with a wideband?

Slow-V6 04-17-2012 10:38 AM

How do the old plugs look?? Are there signs of detonation on them? Are you sure the ping u here is not piston slap? The LS1's are nortorious for that..
