3rd Brake Light

I recently noticed that my IROC has no 3rd brake light. This is the result of having a 91-92 Z28 spoiler matched with a non-91/92 hatch. The 91/92 hatch had the brake light up in the window like below:

How big of an issue is this? I like the Z spoiler that I have now, but the stock 87 hatch would have the 3rd light built into the stock spoiler. I'm sure it wouldn't effect me getting QQ plates, but depending on the LEO, I could have issues at a traffic stop. Any thoughts?

You shouldn't have any QQ issues. And unless you run into a real douche of a police officer you probobly won't have a problem with the 3rd brake light. if worse comes to worse swap a 91-92 hatch on and wire it up and never worry again

I'll have to check and see if Ted or Dave have any black hatches that I could try to just swap on. It wouldn't be worth it to paint one right now.

do you need a whole hatch? you can't just get a light and install it? i'm not familiar with those enough to remember

I hadn't thought of that. I've never owned a 91/92 so I'm not sure how the actual light is affixed. I'll look into that.

$45 shipped (used). Then I'd just have to wire it to the (hopefully still there) 87 stock 3rd brake light wiring.

the 91/92 hatches have an opening in the rear defroster grid/dot matrix for the light to mount/shine through.

either get a 91/92 hatch or an 86 hatch.

personally, i wouldn't even worry about it. the cleaner the look, the better.

also 86 only had the 3rd brakelight outside the hatch up high also. 87-90 is where they were built into the spoiler

again you shouldn't have an issue as gar as QQ goes because you take the two pics when you apply for it. and the requiresments of said pics is one straight on from the front and straight on for one of the sides, doesn't matter which one. I was gonna look at mine when I got home but I see you found one. The Dot Matrix on a 91-92 hatch goes around the brake light

I'm only leaning towards installing the 3rd light because it's the law and because of other drivers.

My IROC came with a rear defroster, but I'm not sure if it works or was ever hooked up to the hatch on it now.

While I agree that it looks cleaner without, there are a lot of idiots on the road today, many with no insurance with which to fix your car if you get rear-ended. I would certainly add a 3rd brake light. I'm working on installing the 3rd brake light from my old '96 Jeep onto my '92 now).
