Pressure treated wood for decking
 

Anyone have a good source for some? Looking for anything better than 89 cents a linear foot. Home Depot had it for that with some water treatment on it already. Thanks for the look!

Yup. While it's extremely durable, Trex is significantly more money. I don't know if they fixed this in their formula but it also gets hot to a bare foot.

Yes the price is a little too much for my parents and I have read about it getting hot. I'm not sure if my father tried either of those yards but I'll suggest he checks them out. Thanks fellas!

Just for the sake of completeness it's probably worth it to price out trex anyway vs. wood and staining. After posting above I looked around and some places are running specials on composites, and over the long term you don't need to do any maintenance more than just some powerwashing.

We just redid our dock with composite and it's cooler to the touch, and no upkeep or splinters as WBT said. I'd give it a shot. Worth the extra money if you use the deck a lot.

While the composite decking is much more convenient than conventional wood maintenance wise there are a couple things to consider..

The price is substantially more (like 2-4$ per linear foot) than pressure treated wood
Since the cut edges are ugly, not finished and show the composite core, you are limited to picture frame style to hide them
All cuts must be sealed, or they will swell after a while (butt joints turn to bumps)
The hidden fastener system is quite expensive and adds up quickly
The finish is great for decks that are low traffic, but can easily be damaged by dropping, sliding, or normal use BUT unlike wood, they can't be sanded and refinished to look like new
Surface can be slick if something is on it
The color you pick is what you are stuck with

Wood is much nicer and natural looking
Wood is not nearly as expensive
You can change color anytime you want
Decks can be sanded and re-stained which can be a pain, but you can make them look like new (great if you have a dog, they tend to wreck the finish off of anything)
Bugs and water like to eat untreated lumber, and wood likes to cup and bow especially treated wood (as it dries, it shrinks, kinks, and can be a PITA to work with)

There are other considerations I'm sure I skipped, but a deck (like any home improvement) is a big financial investment.

Id suggest you use pressure treated wood for the structure, but use regular wood for the decking, just apply a sealer to it after the fact.

The problem is that pressure treated decking from places like homedepot or lowes will dry and warp/shrink/bow a LOT. Look at the reviews of the pressure treated decking on the lowes/home depot web sites.

We did a deck a couple of years ago. Composite was A LOT more than pressure treated wood. Staining is a PITA and the wood is warping. We did buy from a local lumber yard but all treated wood is garbage these days. One of my customers/friends owns and developed Ebty, which is a hidden fastener system. Works well and looks great.

All said, i would not do another deck and wished i had done a stamped concrete patio.

Have you looked into using redwood with stainless fasteners? No stain, real wood, naturally resistant to decay, bugs and other stuff. Not cheap, but might be worth it to price it out if just for comparison sake.

response to the Op ? first: No lumber yards I know of can or will try and beat a Home depot/Lowes for a normal person. If you have a friend who is a contractor then they might get a discount. My brother owns a moderate construction company and by doing his paperwork and bills when he was without an accountant I noticed that he worked out a discount from a couple lumber yards not a box store.

now for my story:
I was repairing my Father in Laws Deck Today that he built 45 years ago with the decking top being 2x4's lol it is a sight to see would give a township inspector hand cramp from all of the violations. Still more work to do but that will wait till next week.

I was trying to talk him into a composite / Wood mix like I did with the 2nd story on my deck I like to use composite if possible but cost as was mentioned is very high. I built my Staircase (about 20 Steps) using composite for the treads and the rest out of traditional pt lumber that I stained to match the deck.

Only thing is with Trex it is quite bendy and wobbly so if you are using it for treads add an extra stringer in there to keep it from bouncing.
