General brake Q: anti-squeal+high temp grease
 

According to the Haynes manual, do I really need to apply anti-squeal compound to the rear of my new pads and high temperature grease to the pins?

I use anti seize on the back of pads where they contact the caliper. I got that from honda, their pads ship with it. But yes you need to do that. Yes you have to grease the slides or the calipers will stop sliding. Those cars already have issues with pins going bad.

If the shims are new or clean, I usually leave them alone. I would only be concerned with where the pad rides on the caliper mount. I always grease the slides. Make sure the rubber boots are in good shape otherwise moisture and water gets into the caliper mount, rusts the pin and mount up, and you wind up with a seized slide. The way Scott does it would be by the books though and the correct way to do it.
