Tinting

So i have been looking online for tips on how to tint my rear glass. I have tried it 3 times and have failed horribly. Any advice or does anyone know a place in north jersey that does it?

pm me my friend did mine some time ago he saod its one of the most difficult hatches he ever tinted.
but he got it with 1 whole piece

I wouldn't. The tint will 99% positively develop air bubbles around the defroster lines. It's a compound curved surface which makes it damned near impossible to get right with flat sheets of tint.

Also, it'll make visibility out of the rear of the car suck balls.

But, to each his own.

Not the hatch. You can paint the hatch black if you want to.

Oh ok, thanks guys! I have a can of flat black rustoleoum, what kinda prep do I need to do for glass?

deadtrend1 09-18-2012 09:50 AM

To add in for anyone seriously unsure ...

In NJ, anything behind the drivers 90* left and right field of vision and back, is legal to tint. So pretty much front doors foward (obviously includes windshield UNDER the AS1 line) is illegal to have tint on it

V 09-18-2012 10:29 AM

well, even the windshield is illegal to touch technically. Banners are not truly legal.

rear door windows and back windows are fair game as well as any 1/4 windows behind the driver(as on some 2 dr cars)

pay a shop... ive used a shop in south hackensack for 2 very successful rear hatch tint jobs.

RyanDestroysWorlds 09-18-2012 11:09 AM

See im kinda just get lazy and aiming toward paying the shop, but i know its not illegal but i do want 35% on my fronts and that i know is illegal but **** it.

Use a palm sander with 60 grit to give it some tooth. Mask surrounding areas for 'overspray'.

I would definitely go to a shop. Even the guys who do it for a living say that's a hard window to do. Plus you can get it warrantied depending where you go

Mark B 09-18-2012 01:00 PM

Please dont spray paint your glass. Pay someone $150 to do it.

Jersey Mike 09-18-2012 01:11 PM

If you shop around, you'll find that you can get a reputable tint shop to do your hatch and front two windows all for $150. I think I remember hearing $100-$125 if it was just the hatch only, since our side windows are so effortless.

Paul Huryk 09-18-2012 03:40 PM

Don't worry about the defroster lines, tint can work around those with no problems.

In terms of legality, NJ still has the draconian tint law to protect cops from not seeing into a car - yet a lot of undercover cop cars are fully tinted, go figure. Anyway, NJ inspection stations no longer fail for side or windshield tint, thanks to Gov. Christie's slimming down of vehicle inspection (pun intended). But cops can and still do issue tickets if they wish for tint, so be aware of that...

All 5 of my cars are tinted all around (except windshield)...

RyanDestroysWorlds 09-18-2012 03:49 PM

Yea I found someone to do the car for 175 all around. No windsheild cause I hate that, My buddy had it on his silverado and it was terrible.

sweetbmxrider 09-18-2012 09:19 PM

I would just use VHT Nightshade. Its like 10 bucks a can and you don't have to worry about defroster lines, dot matrix, etc.
