New ZL1 with smoked trans....

so i was out tonight doing my payday errands, cigs, milk, fish food, gas, etc. i stop by my local hess where i always get gas and what do i see? a brand new, and i mean brand new red zl1 camaro sitting kinda oddly off to the side, not really parked anywhere correctly. the owner of the car comes out talking and is like "atleast that kids camaro runs!"

i asked him what was up. he just traded is g8 in plus quite a bit of cash at route 46 chevy in hackettstown nj for the zl1. he said he ordered it right when they announced availability and worked a deal out with the owner of the dealership. the car had, no bs, 60 miles on it. 60!!!!!! he said the tranny made a loud bang and crunch when he shifted from 3rd to 4th, and he emphasized the grannyshift part of the story. then, as he went to pull away from the light, first let go, then second let go. trans toasted...

come to find the guys g8 was pretty nice and he also has a 09 cts-v with a couple things done to it. ive seen him around in those cars before, and i never saw him beat on them too much. he swore he babied it the whole way, especially since it was raining pretty good. i cant possibly think of how that trans could have tanked unless they didnt fill the damn thing with fluid or something. anyone?

he said the most repulsive thing ever at the end of the convo, "i knew i should have bought a damn shelby!"

Prob 60 miles of joy riding finally let go.

townsend 10-03-2012 10:25 PM

idn man, he wasnt a kid. prolly like early 40's. but you never know. i just dont understand how people can spend that much money and just kick the crap out of something.

Thought you meant he picked it up with 60 miles on it. Regardless, sometimes things break. It will prob be covered under warranty.

I hear ya. But even if those 60 miles were all put on at the dragstrip, the trans shouldnt let go so early. I wonder what caused the failure.

i think what brian meant was 60 miles of idiot shop kids beating on it...i am picturing all the detail guys and shop idiots watching al's youtube video and doing 60 miles worth of launch control attempts on a brand new car

sweetbmxrider 10-04-2012 07:09 AM

 I could see that too, Mike.

The ZL1 had over 2k on it of journalist driven miles on it, an no trans problems. If you watch Drive's series of TV shows, I had the same yellow ZL1 that they tracked around Monticello.
Hope that the dealer fixes it under warranty and no more issues.

yeah me too. after seeing the vid on lsxtv.com with the white camaro being beat on by the techs in easly south carolina i wouldnt be suprised if it was because of them

Driven hard by someone who knows how to drive stick is different than a newb trying the same.

Covered under warranty.

I'd take the charger off it when i brought it back and bitched some more about the 'parts' they left out...lol.

theres no reason that should ever break that fast. Even with driver abuse

You can break a manual trans car extremely fast.

You would have to be pretty bad at driving a stick

Most people who drive performance stick cars, shouldn't!

Within 60 miles? I beat the balls off my LT1/T56 and couldn't break it (within reason of course; dumping the clutch, shifting without the clutch, throwing it in the wrong gear).
Clutch finally blew apart like a grenade when I dumped it at the track lol :-x

not enough power to break it.. sorry you left yourself wide open for that one.

I raced my heads/cam LT1 at the track and power shifted the ever living **** out of it and it didnt break... well, the trans didnt (opti exploded)

Yes and Yes.

ZL1 has a lot more power and traction than you did. And if you drive like a complete psychopath it is very possible. 7000RPM shift with no clutch, or a half dump mid shift. Dropping from 4th to 2nd at 60mph. And the list goes on.
