The Art Of The Sleeper

"The idea of a “sleeper” ain’t a new one: build a rompin’ drivetrain and hide it under a nondescript, wallflowerish yawner of a body and pull out every trick you can think of to deceive the guy in the other lane at the stoplight. We’ve seen some crazy lengths gone to in the pursuit of the ultimate sleeper and this ’72 Nova is just another supreme example.

Now, do what you can to ignore the annoying ramblings of the host in this video and focus on the car, itself. If we saw this thing on the street, the rears tucked neatly up under the wheel wells would give it away a little –– no self-respecting ’72 Nova owner would go through that kind of pain…no, they’d just throw a set of Hi-Jackers under the rear, fill ‘em with air and put the thing in a late-’70s ass-up rake and call it a day. And the sound of this car would give it away in spades, but probably not before it won a few bucks or pinks (if guys are still racing for pinks these days, which we haven’t heard much of in the last 20 years).

But focusing on the car, itself, is what it was built exactly NOT for. A sleeper, remember? Don’t focus on the car, focus on the rear plate as it pulls away from you to your total shock and amazement. THAT’S what it was built for. Is it a hot rod, like the host claims? No. It’s not. Is it a muscle car, like he says? No. It’s not. It’s a SLEEPER. A specific model of Nova that Chevrolet intended as a docile passenger car, turned into a romper with a well-hidden cage and original faded paint and dog-dish caps. That’s a whole different animal, right there.

TONS of respect for this SLEEPER. Not so much for the guy who gets pulled over by a mall cop in it."

Just thought since a few Nova builds are going on around here some might enjoy this, be warned the host is very annoying

Yeah, it's the W2W powertrain car. TONS of little nuances done, like hiding gauges in the glove box, widened factory wheels, etc etc.

Awesome car.

It would have been a better sleeper if it was a 4 door :)

I love this car. It's insane. I like the seat covers lol

1200hp and 9's in the 1/4... sounds as cool as a supra.

Seeing as how they couldn't do any normal chassis mods, yeah.

I've come to the conclusion that anyone who drives something that looks like that is a sleeper - it's almost a cliche. But that thing runs 9 seconds, so even if you were to pull up in a really fast street car (running say 11.50), you would get your headlights sucked out...

Didnt watch the video but from the screenshot im assuming its the nova that was in hot rod like a decade ago?

Yea i wouldnt call that a sleeper. Go down to the local track or meet and plenty of pos cars with nasty motors in them. Shoulda done a 4 door Nova instead
