Wow, any ideas why?

greenformula92 04-18-2013 04:29 PM

that's a little sad

MyFirstZ 04-18-2013 05:01 PM

looks like SLP parts will still be available or at least that's what o am understanding from all these emails I'm getting from different parts dealers.

Blacdout96 04-18-2013 10:07 PM

SLP was a little on the expensive side, but I will say they made some quality stuff.

LTb1ow 04-18-2013 10:27 PM

Overpriced garbage.

Sprayed 99 04-18-2013 10:34 PM

For the most part most their stuff was overpriced and crap.....but some parts were nice......

NHRABill 04-19-2013 12:37 AM

Without SLP would there of been a Firehawk or an increased interest in performance? If you bought their stuff or not liked them or not they were a major part in getting GM to start thinking performance again.
I should have taken that job with them when they were first starting out Went to work for GM instead dumbass me. SLP outlasted GM in NJ by a long shot who would have guessed that.

sweetbmxrider 04-19-2013 07:27 AM

I have one of their spoilers, I like it.

Jersey Mike 04-19-2013 07:36 AM

I have their lid. It's okay. But, still never pleased to see a performance company go out.

What I want to know is, will James buy any products now that they're under Roush? :D

and they were really one of the first aftermarket companies to offer performance parts for EFI vehicles. when computers hit cars so many people thought that was the end of horsepower and modifying your car. I think they were leaders back in the 80s. IIRC the company was founded by a hot rodder ed hamburger, already known for high quality oil pans. I thought he sold his stake years ago though.

redsoxsstink 04-19-2013 07:54 AM

i thought they were doing well but i guess when you get an offer you cant refuse you gotta take it. i believe last summer they were even hiring new employees. any word though if they will keep the slp name just under roush control? or will it become a part of roush performance?

Their parts seemed to be good back before the market got flooded with other company's stuff. I remember back when they were one of the only places you could get aftermarket GTP stuff, and they were one of the few places to get LS1 parts.

For the past few years it seemed to be only lids and loudmouths. I think once the 4th gen got killed it really put a ding in their business.

Slow-V6 04-19-2013 10:44 AM

I have always run a SLP exhaust system on my car. I started out with the Loudmouth 2 and now have a Duel Duel.. My Firehawk had the 2OTL. They made some good parts and a reasonable price. I think a Loud Mouth exhaust with headers and cats sounds amazing on a F-body.

band77one 04-19-2013 12:30 PM

after the pile of **** they sent calling it a loudmouth for a 2011 camaro ss this doesnt surprise me

BonzoHansen 04-19-2013 12:31 PM

maybe roush will breathe new life into. i hope those jobs stay in nj

edpontiac91 04-19-2013 12:36 PM

Yeah, I remember going to a Pontiac Dealership in 1990 near the shore area, and they had several SLP modified Trans Ams on the floor with made up signs telling you what this NEW performance package was all about. It had the Runners/ Prom Chip/ Stainless Headers/ Performance Exhaust System and a Cold Air Box which gave you an extra 50 hp and was "STREET LEGAL PERFORMANCE". Back then the L98 Birds only had 240-45 hp, so adding on 50 hp was a big deal. I remember when they had SLP day at Raceway Park, and filled up the entire day with SLP equipment cars. Their earlier stuff was pretty good, because at that time there wasen't too much performance stuff that was street legal and produced real horsepower.

Brielle Pontiac. I tried to buy a red SLP Formula 350 from them. They refused to budge off the sticker. They closed like 2 weeks later.

They over spent on that giant service facility they built next door. Where the 89 TTA sat inside for sale for an eternity

Blacdout96 04-19-2013 06:34 PM

89 TTA you say?

SLP outlasted GM in NJ? Yes, if you don't count the fact that the Linden plant made cars as far back as the the early 40s, sure.

SLP had nothing to do with GM to start "thinking" about performance.

A friend of the family's father works for SLP, and he was saying that he took a buy out because he didn't want to move to Michigan, so I don't believe SLP is staying in NJ.

My source told me that one of the reasons for the deal was to acquire SLP's GM supercharger stuff, on top of buying up a competitor for 'stang parts.

Frosty 04-22-2013 07:26 PM

I better snatch up some of their front Camaro SS take off brake kits before they go bye bye

Bill is 100% correct - when I was talking to SLP at PRI in December, the Roush guys were in the booth for the hour or so I was talking to their people, they were really interested in the chargers on display; very obvious in fact.

I've actually been in negotiation with SLP to reproduce some of their old TPI and LT1 products no longer made under the CTW Motorsports brand - been getting pushed back and back due to Ed Hamburger being "busy" and not giving me an answer on the projects I proposed. I knew back in February that they were either going to merge with someone or be bought out - guess I was right.

Problem is for me is that the whole thing might be a dead deal or at the other extreme, Roush may want to help us out. Need to get some sort of answer out of them. Bad news is SLP knows me - Roush could care less at this point.

Apparently Hamburger was still running the company, even if he cashed out his equity a while back.
