New beater

3 Attachment(s)
I sold my 2001 Z71 stepside pickup and bought a 2009 Z71 for my daily beater. I can't stand the tires so I have a new set ready to go on with some new wheels. But the truck has some wheel locks and there was no wheel lock key so I need to get the wheels off first. I'm surprised how hard it is to find a regular cab short bed pickup that isn't way overpriced. I priced out new 2014 Z71 regular cab trucks and they are $40K!

Regular cabs are like unicorns in NJ for some reason.

Nice truck though, love those wheels

Looks solid as is if u ask me, good luck with it

Blackbirdws6 02-25-2014 08:41 PM

Good looking truck.

madness410 02-26-2014 12:12 AM

nice new ride. the wheels would look great with that truck painted black imo

maroman88 02-26-2014 02:44 AM

very nice!!

PolarBear 02-26-2014 06:45 AM

I figured you wanted to get rid of that other truck because of gas mileage or something, I didn't think you were going to make a lateral move like this

Featherburner 02-26-2014 06:56 AM

Nice truck, Jeff. Good luck with it.

sweetbmxrider 02-26-2014 07:06 AM

That's a big red truck  I'm not sure I'd call it a beater though, looks good! What's it got?

JL8Jeff 02-26-2014 09:11 AM

For some reason I had the motivation to get something more modern! There was nothing really wrong with my 2001 Silverado, but it was 13 years old. The 2009 has the 5.3 and is loaded with strange options like Bluetooth and some lady keeps telling me she can't connect to Onstar when I never asked her to! The wheels stick out too far because they are the wrong backspacing so I'm going with some other wheels that will tuck in properly and some 35" tires compared to the 33" tires that are on there now. These tires hum big time going down the road but they were really good in the snow last week.

LTb1ow 02-26-2014 09:27 AM

6 lug stuff Jeff?

1320B4U 02-26-2014 09:31 AM

^Its a 1500 so it should be 6lug. Nice truck. I too upgraded to a z71 from a '93 and really like the truck. What kind of lift is on there...4"? Looks good...I am looking at lifts now as all I have is a 2" leveling kit and 32.5"s.

sweetbmxrider 02-26-2014 09:55 AM

Looks like 6 lug in the pics.

Why would you even care about Bluetooth? You don't have anything to sync to the vehicle, lol

So Jeff size on the wheels and tires?

greenformula92 02-26-2014 01:17 PM

I like it man good luck with it

JL8Jeff 02-26-2014 08:39 PM

6 lug wheels and I think it's the 6" Rough Country suspension lift. Wheels are 17x9 Mickey Thompson Classic bead locks with 305/65R17 Baja Claw TTC tires and they have the TPMS sensors in them. I'll probably list them on Craigslist when I'm ready. The front tires are worn a bit, the rear tires look almost new. I got one of the wheel locks off tonight and I was able to remove the one 7/8 lug nut. I need to get the other 2 wheel locks off and then I can bolt on the 35" General AT2's I have waiting to go on.

Good looking truck Jeff! I love my 08 with the 5.3, but I just started to notice a little bit of oil consumption, seems to be pretty common on late model 5.3's with the Active Fuel Management.

NJ Torque 02-27-2014 09:39 AM

Lookin good.

JL8Jeff 02-27-2014 06:52 PM

Got the other 2 wheel locks off tonight with a couple of new 13/16 spark plug sockets 1/2" drive. Hammer them on the Gorilla locks and they are thin enough to be able to grab the splines.

Nice truck.

I've been hunting for a single cab short bed 96-98 1500 (5.7/auto/4wd/fleet side)... I'm about to take a trip 7.5 hours to Vermont to look at a few because their are zero reasonably priced ones around here.

I wouldn't even think about a Vermont truck without someone sending some really good pictures of the underside. This truck came out of NY and it has some noticeable rust. But being 5 years old, it isn't too deep yet. A 96-98 in Vermont is a really scary thought! I would get some good pictures. I did a quick wipedown on it today after swapping the wheels/tires yesterday. The fronts sit where I want them but the rears are tucked in a little farther than I would like. The lift kit pushes out the front wheels at least 1-1/2".

zraffz 03-02-2014 06:56 PM

That truck is gorgeous! What'd you end up paying for it and how many miles are on it?

The red really shows the scratches and scuffs a lot more than my old silver truck. Oh well, it drives great and I really like it so it was a good upgrade.
