cheap 6cyl 91 or 92?

So, toying with the idea of getting a 6 cyl/auto 91 or 92, what are these going for now? What would be the best place to pick one up cheap?

To be honest I think Craigslist usually has a bunch of them in varying conditions.

yea, I am checking those out now :)

figure to see the majority in the 2500-4500 range. its crazy how much people are trying to get.

Yes, that is what I am seeing. I am trying to find a clean un-modified Camaro or Firebird with an air bag. My daughter really likes them and while it would not be my 1st choice for a starting drivers 1st car, they are relatively cheap, parts are readily available for reasonable cost. I can fix them easily and there are plenty of places on the web (like this one) that can help with issues. I have been going back and forth between a newer car (better gas mileage) vs and older one. I really do not like foreign cars (go figure) and the small cars GM made in the 2000s were not that great and they still go for a decent buck. The money I will save on purchase price will go into the tank :). I figure it it survives long enough for her to transition to a better car, she will be able to put it on the QQ list and keep it for low $$.

a 305 TBI car is not much more powerful. why exclude those in your search?

Scott makes a good point. I had a 91 RS with the LO3 and got better MPG than my friends with 6 bangers. It does have a little more power, I think the rating difference between the 3.1 and the 5.0 TBI is about 25hp which isn't really much in a 3400+ lbs car. The LO3 auto's are also typically mantled with a peg leg 2.73(manual trans usually got 3.08's) rear so it is hardly a "hit it and hold on" kind of a ride.

With a handful of free/super cheap mods I could get close to 30mpg on straight highway trips.

Interesting! Just my un-educated opinion that 6cyls got better gas mileage than a v8. I will be very interested in the free/super cheap mods that can be done to increase MPG, if I succeed in finding a good one. I do not want anything collectable or rare, just a plain old Camaro that some thief will not want to take, since she will be parking it in public lots for shopping and work. :)

^ Its true. Mine is an lo3 and I got 27mpg out to Carlisle years ago and has been reliable w/regular maintenance performed. I'd be more worried about a cobalt ss's power than my third gen for a new driver however safety wise (abs/active handling in the new cars) would be better piece of mind imo (3rd gens don't have the greatest visibility for a new driver).

Allentown hs is actually gonna have a cool car in the parking lot? That hasnt happened since i graduated.

KevinW 05-02-2014 08:51 PM

That is the goal :)
