2002 Grand Prix/ ABS lite just came on/ Need HELP!
My 2002 Pontiac GP just had the ABS and No Traction lite come on right after a FULL DAY of downpour last week. It came on and off several days, but now it just stays on. I could use someone with a scanner to see if it just a sensor, or will it be attached to a hub bearing (and cost me a small fortune). I went to my local Mr.Tire store and was told they could check it out for $52.00 and if I got the work done there, no charge for the inspection. BUT if they wanted to hit me with the moon for the repair and I declined, pay for the scanner inquiry.
I will pay you for your time and if it is a sensor (and easy to replace) there is a NAPPA store and PepBoys and Advance Auto within 5 minutes from my house. I recently had the Left front hub bearing done at Miller GMC/ Buick several months ago due to a humming sound coming from it, so I guess I could eliminate that side. Thanks in advance for any help! |
Why not go to advance auto or pep boys and have them read the code for free?

Yep. Go to your local chain parts place (not NAPA) and get a scan.
For what it's worth, it could be neither. I popped an ABS light in my old GP when the alternator went south. |

my dads monte has the same issue, I started looking into it but lost interest. invest in a code reader that does ABS also, ~60 bucks

I dropped the car off at a shop (Freedman Auto Service) on Rt. 27 in Edison. They do a LOT of tire work for us at work, and they were recommended very highly by our Mercedes account Manager. Here is what they found, a wire leading along the frame rail that was attached to the sensor for the brake hub, had worn a section and it was shorting out in the rain and that was all that needed replacement. It feels good to know that there are shops out there that you can trust, but they are FEW and FAR between. It cost me $125.00, but a lot cheaper than some other shops that may have said "You need a New Hub Bearing because the wire sending unit in your old one is shot".

Glad to hear you got it taken care of - good that it was just something simple.

Al, the owner Jake, was one of the most pleasant people I have ever met and their knowledge of the problem was right on the mark. They have a pretty good staff of techs that are familiar with problems that occur on certain models and get to the cure right away. They also stock quite a selection of hard to find tire sizes and brands due to the type of High Performance tires our loner cars need, such as for Mercedes-Audi-Infiniti-Nissan-Subaru-etc.

Yeah, I've talked to him a few times. I haven't been in Edison in a few weeks. I think I'll head that way on Wednesday and talk with him.
