Need advice.....Paint, Part, or Wrap?

Here's the story, I have a 99 hoss with 100k miles. The car runs great, has a built stage 2 t56 with a tick master and cf df clutch, and boltons (stainless headers, BBK ssi manifold, etc). The issue is the car has clear coat peeling on almost every panel. I've decided it's time to part with it but I don't know what the best route is since the f body market is all over the place. I can have the car completely painted for 4k by a friend but will I just be throwing money away? I can part the car but is that the best course of action? The last option is to wrap it as close to the original color as possible but what will that do to the value? I'm not emotionally attached to the car at all, nor am I in any rush to get rid of it. What do you guys think I should do? What would be a fair price for a mint 99 hoss (assuming I get it painted)? What do you guys typically end up with $ wise when you part an fbody? What's a wrapped 99 ss worth?

How long would you keep it if you were to paint it?

That's a tough call. Wrapping by a professional will probably be close enough to the paint job that its not worth it. Doing it yourself saves on labor but there will be a learning curve. The body panels need to be in excellent condition as any surface imperfections will show, even the peeling clear. If you are trying to get top dollar, it isn't worth it. I don't think you have enough mods to warrant parting it out. If anything I would return it to stock or as close as you want, selling off what will bring in more cash on its own instead of left installed, and then sell the car with the fresh paint job. Does it need full paint? Or could the clear be sanded and sprayed over the original ( I assume) paint?

I'm with Mike, do you plan on keeping it if you repaint it ?

I'm kinda stuck with my car so that's why i spoil it

Just my opinion, but if you are looking to sell then get a few body shop quotes to see what it would take to make the car into "more" sell-able condition. The peeling paint will be an immediate red flag for MOST people to either not bother looking at the car or low balling you because they know it will need paint. Some folks can look past cosmetic items and recognize a good running car but finding that perfect buyer will be tough.

If getting a quick re-clear or fix of the paint isn't too much money, it will help move the car. I wouldn't put $4k into a paint job for something you are going to sell. I don't see you getting much of that $$ back.

So the question is paint & sell, wrap & sell, sell as-is or part out? If so I'd vote 3 or 4.

Don't put $4k into a car worth $8-9k just to sell it. So I think that eliminates paint & wrap, unless you can get the clear reshot cheaper. But I doubt it once you get past proper prep. A a buyer wrap would reduce value due to its potential lack of longevity and the old what are you hiding aspect.

With bad paint but otherwise nice I guess that is a $4k-$6k car? Maybe the other guys will chime in on current prices. It's not a special car I guess but SS does help a bit (some kind of rare collectors edition, etc), and it's modded.

I don't know if the part out market is as good as it once was. It is very likely worth more in parts, but then you have all the added nuisance of parting a car out. Time, hassle, parts all over the place, etc.

As-is... I'd say $3000-4000... painted $5000-7000

sell as is.

I part cars a lot. you will not make the majority of the money back for years. unless you have time tools and storage space, parting cars is a waste. You also need to know the approximate value of parts. I also have over 15 years of "documented" selling parts with happy buyers on many forums and ebay. Some buyers do look for that.

I would sell the car complete even with poor paint since it would be the perfect donor car for some one doing an ls swap. id think you could get 5-6k for it as is.

Thanks guys for the advice. I'm not keeping the car either way, just looking for the best route to sell it. I'll get a few more quotes on the paint work, worst case scenario I'll sell as is.

If you're not keeping it, then definitely do not do a full re-spray.

Post a couple of current pictures of the car here. That will help.

Have you received any estimates for the wrap job yet?

Do you know anyone with access to wholesale cost of auto body? I have a friend that sells used cars and he gets auto body work done cheaply. For example, his cost to repaint your car would be less than $1500. That may help make the car more marketable.

Nonetheless, I would still try and sell as-is first. You may find an end user willing to accept the paint as it is for whatever reason.

the problem with the clear coat peeling is it needs allot of hand work sanding/filling, i painted mine myself and came out pretty good but without a paint booth it can only be done in the spring or summer and will always get a little dust is it but with a good wet sanding and buffing it looks great.
Factory colors are expensive, standard colors are much cheaper, i spent less than $400. in materials for mine and still have enough to paint 2 more cars.

Is this yours? If not, it seems like a decent comp.

have you considered plasti-dipping the car before selling. I did my friends top sportsman 63 vette in flat black. it was a temp solution so he could run a few more races. came out way better that either one of us thought it would. I think he spent no more than $300ish on everything. Keep in mind my time way free because we are good friends. its not the best option but a cheaper option. that stuff is supposed to hold up pretty well so you wont be screwing over the next guy.
