Compression testing the white whale (98 legacy 2.2L)

Car smelled like gas during start up. Didn't run 100% while cruising. I did plugs/wires/coil recently, so I figured it's either a bad injector, or bad compression.

Easiest thing to test is compression.

Cylinders 2, 3, 4:

Great!

****.

I drop a little bit of oil in the cylinder

So I said **** it. I ran Motor Medic through the car twice, and put a drop in the cylinder.

I didn't take a picture, but now its squeezing ~174psi!!!!!! Car runs much better.... now...

taking bets on how long it'll last :bertstare:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this a common issue with Subbies?

WildBillyT 06-01-2017 09:17 AM

Caulk it and float it across the Raritan River. If you do it at the Duke meet I'll cook you an extra burger.

Not the 2.2. Usually the bodies rust out from under the 2.2. ALso, its cylinder 4 that's usually the failure on the turbo motors haha. it is probably not ringland failure, just weak rings or maybe it was frozen and I freeeeeeeeeed it! Ringland failures are common on the turbo subies

Motor isn't worth anything  worst that happens? spin a bearing? if rings are shot motor is going in the garbage anyway lol. if a magic trick in the oil works then yay, if not, new motor haha

True. I'm a gambler so it's natural for me to try to spend $10 to save myself a motor swap:lol:

ThoR294 06-21-2017 04:26 PM

still running strong!

I just thought about everything I did to this wagon, maybe I'll post my "build thread" from the subaru leggy forums here to show you guys how kewl non-vaping-ringland-eating subarus are!
