Historic? Collector? WTF?

So, my '98 is 26 years old.

Is there any benefit to going Historic? Collector?

I know the inspection thing goes away. Any pitfalls to it?

technically Q plates limit use. No inspection. No more renewal fees. You have to go to a MVC office to submit application.

"To be considered a historic vehicle, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old and only used for exhibition and educational purposes by the owner. Historic plates can be purchased for $44."

You probably would not get collectors, from what others have said lots of hoops to jump through on that. Plus i think when its QQ eligible that option goes away.

If you qualify for historic by age, you can't apply for collectors. Just went through this with my 97. I had collectors but couldn't renew given age and decided to just go private inspection with a plug in that went fine. In a couple years I'll see if QQ is the move.

I have classic tags on mine

Always wondered this. I have had regular inspection and just Hagerty insurance.
benefit of collectors or QQ? Slightly cheaper registration it seems with just more restrictions?

BonzoHansen 09-15-2024 07:51 AM

QQ is $0 reg renewal

My insurance is less than $100 through Grundy/Philadelphia Insurance.

"To be considered a historic vehicle, the vehicle must be at least 25 years old and only used for exhibition and educational purposes by the owner."

See, this is just vague enough that I don't get what they mean. If I go for a ride to the supermarket to pick up dinner, isn't that a form of exhibition? Or educational in letting people see the car?

I feel that it's confusing enough to make folks avoid it.

I drove my El Camino everywhere and used it as a daily for a bit on QQ tags, never had an issue. Got pulled over for failure to signal and cop didn't even mention the tag.

Agreed upon value too? That's cheap!

Yes, but value is low. Like $5k. I think it's because it's an add on for policy of other cars but all in, it's only a couple hundred a year for all 3 of them. Total agreed value is close to $100k.

Oh, maybe. I think I pay $300 or so for the Z at agreed upon value of like 18k.

there is a reason i buy 95 and older stuff

94 Firebird - regular tag (no inspection due to age) safeco agreed upon value of 12k is 300 a year

94 Camaro Convertible - regular tag (no inspection due to age) Hagerty agreed upon value 10k is 250 a year

None besides needing a separate DD and being garage kept with Hagerty. No mileage limits or restrictions on driving.

Well, I don't think I'm covered on a racetrack but since I don't race it never concerned me.

On Hagerty...you are protected going to and leaves the track, in the pits ans staging, etc. At least per the endorsement on my policy. Just not on the actual track. And you are technically restricted from using it to go to work.

That's what I thought on the track side. I never paid attention to the work one because I need my work truck anyways  but good point!

I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the heads up.
