Defenitly get the rear end out of the way. Thats my biggest mistake in my 85' was not getting a reliable and performance oriented rear end.

For a 78, I guess theirs tons of things you can do, it should be a little more flexible on choices. Im no expert but I would go with a beefy 12-bolt, and then you wouldnt have to worry about Jack.

you need to figure out some goals before you go spending a ton of cash on parts.
12-bolts are nice, but for the average to reasonably quick street level car they amount to little more than a weight reduction mod on your wallet. you stock 10bolt is an 8.5, very strong rear. get yerself a good posi unit, auburn pro series or equivalent, and a set of gears that matches the way you intend to use the car and the power band of the motor. also, what kind of a rebuild is teh motor getting? build up or just a freshening? mild or wild? have you considered a crate motor? let us know what the final goals are and the members will help get you there. later tim |

i want the car for street use, i want it to run mid 11's hopefully outta my 350 if possible without spend a rediculous amount of cash,id liek to use my motor, no crate,......stick woth my stock 10 n do posi n gears or go for a 12bolt??? thanks for all the help |
Take your motor and strip it down to the shortblock. Get some vortec heads and Comp Cams XE274 camshaft, Edelbrock RPM intake, 750 Holley DP. Get a good torque converter around 3500RPM stall, find yourself a 8.5" 10-bolt with 3.73-4.11 gears, and buy a nitrous kit... hello 11.50's.
Sounds easy, eh? |
