Kuhmos and Hankooks are very similar....

Craig got his from a local tire dealer, and they gave him the Hankooks for the price of another tire he wanted that they didn't have in stock (IIRC)

I am and will always be a huge fan of BFG, so I say go with the KDWS's. A great all around preformance tire. Its what comes on the GTO standard.


Kuhmo is a so/so brand. Its our low-buck performance tires.
When it comes to tires, spending a little more will get you a much better tire.

I have BFG's. Very good for the money. Very good dry weather traction, good wet weather traction. Treadwear of 400, traction AA temperature A.

i just had KDWS put on the formy before i sold it and i liked 'em a lot, although Mike likes 'em to burn up

I'd go Pirelli's. They aren't number one in their catagory on tirerack for no reason! They've got excellent tread wear and awesome grip in everything. I'm not buying another tire for this car and I've been through many a brands, nothing touchs this tire, nothin. And full street/handling trim on 245/50-16 at 36psi I was cutting 2.02 sec 60's. I find that semi impressive for a tire that's an all season. I'm expecting low 1.9's with a drag setup because as is the car is level, no weight transfer.
As for the BFG's, from what I've used they're the brand that you can trust. It's no performer but it's better than Kuhmo's (crapo's). Never buy Kuhmo's unless it's a semi-beater of a car. NONE of their tires do well in the snow and the tread wear is junk. Oh, and the 2 sets of Kuhmo's I've had ALL had to be balanced dynamicaly (weights on inside and out) with huge weights. The Perelli tires I have now don't even have weights and they're smooth as glass. Also lower road noise than any of the other tires I've had which include dunlops, kuhmo's of course, BFGs, Goodyears, and Conti's.

i stay away from most of teh big brands liek bfg and goodyear. half of teh price is jsut based on the name on the side of teh tire, not teh quality of the product.
prielli's are sweet tires at a fair price, craig's hancook's handle awesome in wet and dry, and i rocked several sets of teh cheaper yokohama's and was very happy with them at autocrosses adn on teh street in all weather.
don't over look the cooper tires either, they are a great bang for the buck.

what kinda trans u got?

Currently sporting the cars original 188k mile 4L60 with a SLP shift kit and 1 rebuild about 4 years ago. Installed a continental 2800stall TC about 2 years ago but forgot how much fluid it needed. Ended up burning up the 2-3 clutch pack and it's been that way ever since. I actuall have to LIFT right before the 2-3 shift on my trans hence the 13.6 @ 104 and not 13.4 @ 105+. Kind of sucks knowing a rebuild is the only option. I'm contimplating it over this winter since a rebuild will run me about $400 in parts and a T56 is like $1400. Don't really have that extra grand to dump into the car when so many other things need attention.

I have 245/45ZR17 Continental ExtremeContacts on my '88 SS, and like them a lot. I even managed a 2.3 60' on them at E-town. I need more practice launching with the 5-speed. :)
