I think my computer has a virus.

Let's see. It's a HP Pavilion 7920 running Windows ME.
I can't restore my computer. Everytime I try, it loads up all the way and after it restarts it says 'Restoration was Unsuccessful'. I also can't download videos. When I right click, and go to 'Save Target As' the computer freezes, and when I try to click on something it sounds like a bell. Sometimes for no reason the computer stops doing anything, so I press 'Ctrl, Alt, Delete' and 'Msniasvc [Not Responding]' comes up.

Anyone know where to start?

ME...i thought the same thing when i read it...lol. Wait, thats what im running on...oh well. i only use this thing for music, and, occsionally, internet. Talk to Alexis (TransAmChick). shes working on my laptop. she knows what shes talking about with computers

if your looking for something free... its not the greatest and it doesnt quite get everything. but it gets enough. try downloading spysweeper. problem is its hard to uninstall that program. but its useful to keep.

I'll try and see what happens. Thanks.

spybot search and destroy, ad-aware (they each find different things) and Panda antivirus. why not Norton or Macathief? i don't trust them since i heard one of them introduced a virus way back when in order to be the first one with the antidote. Panda is lesser-known, and it came on this computer with win98se (now running XP). i rarely find anything on my computer. mostly double-click, which is pretty harmless as far as ad-software goes.

I say go for SpyBot and Ad-Aware, and also download Avast! antivirus....I switched from Norton because it is really free (www.avast.com) and it found a few things on my PC that Norton Pro 2004 with latest updates let slip.

I did some kind of Spyware Adware scan and nothing came up.

Tru2Chevy 11-30-2004 10:40 AM

What anti-virus are you running?

- Justin

arc555 11-30-2004 08:46 PM

None. I don't even think it's worth it on this computer. Not anymore atleast.

I clicked on the English version to download, and it happened again. The screen freezes, and if you try to click on something, it sounds like a bell and nothing happens. :x

HijackThis 1.98.2
Adaware
Spybot
TeaTimer (tool in spybot that monitors your registry and lets you decide if you want to allow things to install themselves or not, very useful)
Mozilla FireFox v1.0 instead of leaking worthless Internet Exploiter v6.blows
Anti-virus software is POINTLESS if you use the above programs exclusively

Use Hijackthis if you're advanced enough. Oh, and don't forget to use the "imunize and update" features in Spybot... they'll save your computer from ever needing a clean format and fresh install.
I get paid to do the above to peoples computers, so download and use the software!
If you need help, just let me know. I've been known to fix computers for free dinners  .

I recently (like two days ago) downloaded Adobe Reader 6.0 and now once in a while something pops up from the lower right hand corner of the screen. It says it's 'Gain Advertising.' It advertises for Circuit City and other products. And it has nothing to do with the website I'm currently on. Does anyone know how to get rid of it?

Try uninstalling it from the add/remove programs in the control panel. If that doesn't work, look at my previous post for software that will help you clean up.

Gain is Gator software. it is the anti-christ, and you need to get rid of it. running hi-jack this, spybot search and destroy or adaware will find it and delete it. you need to get rid of that junk because it shares your personal information with other ad software sites, and it will eventually lead to the destruction of your computer. ok, i am being over-dramatic, but it is nasty stuff and you do not want it on your computer.

arc555 12-24-2004 07:49 PM

I finally found it on the list of programs I can remove. Thanks.
