leaky wa wa pump
 

well got some bad news that my water pump is leaking, so im going to replace it. Do you guys reccomend doing it yourself, i mean is this a hard project? I've been told i can get a pump for like 150-200 and to replace all the front main seals while everything is off. What is your take on this guys any help is appreciated.

what do you have a fourth gen?

Easy as hell. It's just a pain to scrape the old gasket off the block that's all.

should be easy, just look into the water pump drive shaft seals, aslo try to get the least amount of coolant onto the distributor. you also may want to consider doing a electric conversion at this time. If my lt1 pump ever goes, im doing the electric motor swap myself.

what are the electric's advantages?

the lt1 water pumps are driven by means of a shaft connected to the cam shaft in a type of way. Â*the hole where that shaft comes through the timing cover can sometimes leak and cause oil damage to the optispark distributor. Â*The electric conversions bolt right into the OEM housings and i think are comparable in cost to a replacement stock lt1 water pump. Â*I just want him to be aware of other options.

Dont LT-1 Caprice SS's have Electric Pumps, or is it just common that everyone I have seen did the conversion.

maybe caprice SS's are electric, lol, but i dont think Impala SS's are. I'm 99% sure my lt1 pump is shaft driven, the motor is out of a 96 Impala SS (6,609 miles) But in the future i'm goign to to the hedy duty electric pump which only directly fits the impala housings. The elctric conversion is big with the Impala SS crowd though. oh and yes there are caprice SS's in europe. :lol:

Is there a hour life to the electric waterpumps?I think i read it somewhere..

im preety sure they didnt make caprice SS's in the US. ;x

and caprice classics dont have elec pumps. Any when i replaced my water pump i saw most of the elec water pumps are cheaper then the oem..if that floats your boat.

not a hard job tho
