Chevy 305 Blueprints
 

I have the opportunity to pick up an 88 TA this weekend. It has a 305 TBI system in it, but the engine doesn't currently run.

Does anyone have an assembly manual or blueprints for a Chevy 305? And for that matter, does anyone have an assembly manual for an 88 TA?

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to restorations, however I really want to do this. Any help?

i would think a haynes/chiltens manual would give you a good start...they have most of the information needed...anything further you could probably find on ebay on the cheap.

Dave I think I have a Hayes manual for that car. It's not as good as Chilton's but you can have it if you want. As far as the engine, it's about the same as any other small block except for the sensors and emissions equipment. There is probably some info on those topics in the Hayes manual.

LOL I have the Haynes manual for the Thirdgens so I'm good there. Their black and white photos arent the best though.

If it turns out a lot of money would go into repairing / replacing things in the current block, I'd like to find out who has a 305 TPI lying around. I'm going for he poor mans restoration, more for experience with a giant tinker toy than any real performance expectations. As I recall the TBI's arent bad per se. I just recall more people enjoying TPIs instead. Plus I have the TPI book from Cartech.

What about an assembly manual for the TA itself? Something with exploded views of the various sections of the car?

Why are you putting a 305 back in? The money spent on rebuilding a 305 could be spent on a 350.

It is his car, but I agree with Al. I was going to suggest the same thing. If there is any machine work required or new pistons etc, then the cost to do a 350 instead of a 305 is marginally different.

Leaning more towards the purist side of things, I preferred to keep the car as close to spec as possible. If it were a GTA I would definately go for the 350. As it will be a cruiser and not a racer, I'd rather stick to the 305 and save at least a little gas. The TPI should help there too.

Actually, come to think of it, it has a TBI in it now. If I switch to TPI I'd have to recalibrate the ECM anyway right? So swapping a 305 for a 350 (if I would need to rebuild most of the original engine) wouldn't require more then recalibrating the ECM also, right? I'll have to think about that. Plus I would expect a 305 to be cheaper and more readily available than the 350.

You're correct on the ECM tuning. As far as price, you're only talking a couple bucks between the two really. If you find a block cheap enough pistons and everything else are about the same.

Actualy, you could probably build a 350 cheaper and make more power then if you were to make a 305. Â*350's are probably the most popular engines out there. Â*You could pick one out of a pick up truck, machined it, put L98 iron heads on it, TPI, and harness and your good to go.

and going from TBI to TPI is going to require a lot of moddification to the TBI's wiring harness, as well as a different PCM. Â*TPI's PCM is a little faster over rthe TBI's. Â*It would be easier to just find a TPI PCM and harness. Â* Â*

I mean, yeah its your car, Im just throwing this idea out. Â*305's are nice for basic transport and small moddification, but after awhile the 350 just becomes a lot cheaper and you can produce a lot more power from it for the same amount of cash you spend on the 305.

Thanks for the insight guys. The only real way to know that your engine runs fine is to rebuild it, it seems. So maybe just making the current (non functioning) 305 into a boat anchor and just shopping around for a 350, TPI setup with wiring harness and PCM, and finding a way to reset the ECM, is the better way to go.

Mike, does the Chiltons manual have exploded views of some of the assemblies, both within the engine, and things like the dash/guages, interior, etc?

no they do not, they only tell you step by step how to rebuild it and the only specs they give are on simple things. the book is not a good book to rebuild a motor by. if you want some specs, IM me
