Local Legal Issue

I was driving to work on my regular route and I didnt see & could not avoid this 1 foot deep pot hole. I hit it pretty hard, hard enough to turn my stereo off. I didnt stop to check it because the car was still driving straigh. When I got to work and look at the wheel, I noticed my Passenger side tire formed a egg size lump on the sidewall, along with a nasty gash in the actual wheel. Now I know this is defenitly not safe to drive on. Now my question to you...

The tire that needs to be replaced is easily a $200 tire. I refuse to pay for this since it was not my fault. I had nothing else to do it was either swerve into the car next to me to avoid a pot hole, or slam on the brakes and get re-ended. You decide whats worse...

Should I call the Local Police, Department of Public Works, or call the municiple building and see what can go. I'm going to take photos of the offending pot-hole along with the damage to the wheel & tire, before I get it replaced.

Im really hopping the town will be polite and float the bill, but thats wishfull thinking.

You can come to me for a price quote!
I have had customers do this, and you want to talk to DOT since they are in charge of the roads. Have the cost of the tires in hand, and they usualy will give you the money.

are you sure thats a pothole and not a crater in the earth's crust?

you can go to the DOT or the Department of Public works, but as long as you get in contact with the state in some way or another, and SOON, they can pay for damages.
