Need some help
My steering wheel has been getting a lot of play lately, and I wanna fix it. Thing is I don't have an extension to get to the bolt (I dunno the actual name, but the knuckle at the end of the rod that comes out of the steering wheel...), but as I understand it I loosen that bolt, tap the knuckle back up towards the car until there's no play left, tighten that bolt.
Ok that just sounded a lot more uneducated than I intended haha, but anyway if you know what I just attempted to describe then would anyone mind lending a hand? |
from what your explaining it sounds like more of removing the steering column than removing any play. If im correct the only way to remove excess play is to adjust the steering box itself(i know that is done on fords at least) or by replacing worn tie-rods. Losenging that steering shaft bolt will just let the shaft seperate from the column. If the column itself feels liek its falling aprt, that losness has to be repair inside the column itself.

I'm kickin my own ass here since I can't explain it too well... ill go take pics lol

Pics! Pics! Yet another reason why we need a section on these forums for posting project related pics and suggestions.
I'm interested in the subject as well since I'll be doing a wheel swap and not sure what to expect. |
OK, I was told to (cliff notes style here:) loosen this bolt, tap it up, tighten the bolt. But I need an extension to get down there, and maybe a torque wrench for when I tighten it back up.

just taaaaaaaaaaaaap it in.......tap tap tap tapperoo.. ;)
it's allllllll in the hips.....it's allllllllllll in the hips. |
yeah, thats what i was thinking of, im pretty positive that by tapping that wont do much good. that bolt is mainly to remove the lower shaft from the steering column main shaft. on that style with all the angles and u joints it MAY tighten it up some, but on older styles it doesnt do that. I have tools here if you want to try it sometime though.
