Backfiring through the intake is almost always fuel starvation. Have you replaced the fuel filter? What about the fuel pump? Those are the 2 things that need to be replaced on old TBI vehicles.

If it's not popping up a code and it's falling on it's face from the 60 to the 1/8 mile I'd say it's the tune. The 4.10's and 3000 stall would hide even bad tuning so it's hard to pin point.
