Well, that is a dumb mistake, but in my experience with my own cars and working at my dad's shop, I don't think I've ever seen a gasket stick to the block rather than stay with the oil filter when you remove it (not saying that it doesn't happen, it's just not common). So the kid just wasn't paying attention.
