I beg to differ. I think this is nothing more than spyware. Malitious but effective. A virus it isn't because this is advertising.
I've seen some nasty spyware. The tuffest to get rid of was running 2 processes (programs in the background) that would keep tabs on each other. Try and kill one process and the other would envoke it back to life. That wasn't even all that hard. I just downloaded the newest version of spybot, restarted the computer in safe mode, installed spybot, ran spybot the way I do. I also recommend using spybot's built in teatimer program which monitors the registry very carefully. If anything is installing itself into a windows startup it'll let you know and ask you if you want to allow it or not. Obviously if it asks you if you want to allow blah blah blah to be entered into the registry and you're installing something like winamp well DUH, allow it, if you're not sure, deny, .
The hardest to remove are from the computers that haven't been protected with basic tools. Tools like a firewall be it hardware or software. Also any computer using IE is basically up for grabs.
Have you downloaded and run hijackthis? If not, get it, run it, and paste the results here.
