not really. VTEC engages at higher RPMs, not whenever you want it to engage. it's not saving any gas at all.
actualy it sorta does, think about what you said it engages at high rpms, so unless your racing or ****** around why should you be at high rpms??? so in a way you do save gass
everyone saves gas if they don't go into high RPMs.

VTEC is a way to extract more power out of a tiny engine by switching to a different camshaft at a certain RPM (somewhere around 6000 or so).
even if you arent in high RPMs, the engine is still using less gas because of the less aggressive cam pattern. That way it can get great gas mileage, and still make a decent amount of power for the engine size.
