I started off here without the car as well, learning a lot about the mechanics while enjoying time with new friends.
I hate to see you drop out Steve before youve had a chance to get involved beyond the forums. I have spent many more hours at peoples houses / place of business buying parts or just shooting the breeze than I have at any official meets. I agree, it's more about the community than the technology.
Feel free to just lurk for a while, check in to see the events, and keep in contact with the few whom you;ve met at least. Despite the location of your house
