"What It Means to be Italian"
by John Barbieri
The view of the Italian today is very skewed. Â*Such groups as the Gottis, with their spiky hair, whiny demeanors, and "tough guy" attitudes because of their inherited last name, make all Italians chringe. Â*And the sad part is, it is rubbing off on society. Â*Teenage boys now have the urge to turn their hair into that of a DBZ character. Â*Why? Â*Do you look tougher with spiked hair? Â*Are you trying to control the hair gel population? Â*Did a bottle of hair spray kill your mother? Â*Whatever the reason, real Italians do not spike their hair up. Â*When real Italians do use hair gel, like myself, they slick it back, to give that little bit of a Godfather look. Â*Or they don't use any hair product at all, which is the real Italian hair style. Â*An Italian boy is supposed to grow up respecting his mother and father. Â*If I ever yelled at my mother the way the Gottis do, she would smack me into the middle of next week. Â*And what's with the huge chains. Â*I know Sicilians are considered "1/2 black", but this is ridiculous. Â*Save the bling for the rappers and put on a gold chain passed down from your father, whose father gave it to him, and so on. Â*And the wearing all black, save it for when you go to a funeral. Â*Italians do wear other colors. Â*And learn to speak the language a little bit. Â*And I don't mean, "fuggedaboudit"or "va fungool." Â*Learn to have somewhat of a convo with a fellow Italians. Â*And whatever happened to a father taking his young son down to the coffe shop, to watch a soccer game, have some coffee, and meet his friends who all say how big you have gotten.
So if I any Italians can hear this, put down the gel and hairspray, put away your bling, tell your mom you love her, and get a cup a coffee with your father.
Good nite, and god bless
