Hrm, actualy it sounds like a bad alt. You said your voltmeter in your car was down? Were your lights dim? Did you have a low idle? Did they seem to come back on if you gunned the gas?
If you can pull the code from the computer, I have the code book, as well as a break down to figure out wtf is going on.
