if my memory holds out, i don't think they were called "trans am" until 1969. although they were originally created for the trans am racing series, they were initially just called firebirds. funny how everyone wanted to associate themselves with the trans am racing series, even dodge had a model tagged the T/A.

jim wangers, the pontiac guru, set it all straight in one of the "American Muscle Car" series episodes. that man has forgotten more about those cars than most men will ever know. btw, if you have a few minutes, this is an enjoyable nostalgic bit on jim wangers' website.
