Best way to learn is to just do it. Ask questions when you get stuck. I've learned everything about working on cars/trucks/boats by just doing it myself. If you want to learn how to rebuild an engine, trans or rear, then that gets more involved and takes some specialized tools to make sure you do it right(if it's high performance). Heck, I could've used ya last night to finish hacksawing the intermediate pipe on my SS. The Sawzall could only get 3/4 of the way through because of the tunnel so I had to finish sawing it by holding the blade in my hand! It took about 2 hours when it should have taken minutes. But as you've already learned, things don't always go the way you hope they do.
