The LS1s are different but nicer, you dont even have to remove the intake manifold to do a cam swap, just remove the valve covers, and unbolt the rockers i believe then turn the cam a few times and all the lifters pop up.

I could do a cam on a SBC any day of the week, but its just the work involved that can get difficult on a car thats 20something years old. rust takes over, bolts break, wires become brittle, etc.
