He is correct. My car was registered in 4 different states before I brought it here to new jersey and in each state my car had a different name on the title and registration. So....I guess it really depends on what you write on the forms you fill out at the dmv when registering your car, and on the person working the counter at the dmv and what they type in the computer. All of my paperwork says formula/trans am even though it is a formula. The insurance companies know that there will be human error in the model names of cars or that people will try to scam the insurance companies, so thats why they go with the vin number.
