Then, to get home, I need to leave the office by 3:30, to get the 2 or 3 subway to Penn Station, to get the train to Hackettstown that leaves at 4:12. This 4:12 train gets me home at 6:30. If I miss that 4:12, every train after that doesn't get me home until 8! So, right now it's imperative that I get that 4:12.

kevin, would it be easier for you if you just took the train out of dover since there are a lot more (i think one every half hr) whereas hackettstown only has a few per day? last time i tried to take the train from home there was only two per day, one in and one out.
