its complicated, yes its a techinically a secondary offense, but cops still pull over for it. and that reason is usually is for "obstruction of veiw" which many tint tickets are called anyway. also anythign hanging from the rearveiw mirror is illegal and also considered obstruction of veiw. As for asking a cop why he pulled you over and if he says tints, that in no way gets you out of a ticket. and if you say "well you can't just pull me over for tints"... you're gonna get one if not more tickets right there. Never try to tell a cop the laws, lol, they will almpst always win. Ive dealt with tints on my cars for almost all of the 9 years ive been driving. ive taken a few tickets, talked my way out of most, and for the past 2 years i just dont get tickets And remember it all comes down to this, tints may look great, but they are illegal in NJ and were for a long time, so its nothing new. its a risk we have to take if we want the look.

Now im not sayign cops are always right, one night i got pulled over because the cop said my car was too loud and the tint on my HATCH was illegal(rear tint can be 0% if desired), anyways, i didnt get a ticket(of course) but i wanted to argue but i shut up and went on my way, mainly because i was just at a bar and probably shouldn't have been driving. but a cop i know told me i should have argued and got the ticket just so that cop would have been laughed out of court. oh and as for the loud car, i was driving around with NO catback and a off-road y pipe, lol. i had it liek that for about 6 months, never a ticket.
