“…so I see no benefit in running 3 inch halfway to the back and switching to a larger pipe…”. I think you are right – the exhaust gasses cool as they flow down the system – becoming less dense. So I see no benefit in larger down stream pipes. I bet slightly smaller pipes would have zero impact.
