Yeah, gear oil is about the rudest as you can get. I was working on a Torino 9" a few years back and accidentally cracked one of the rusty axle tubes. I didn't notice at first and walked away for a little while. When I came back the smell was overpowering and there was a DARK black puddle around the axle. You could smell the stink 250 feet away. I ended up having to tile the garage floor because the concrete stain was too righteous for anything else. I'm pretty sure that it was the original 1970 gear lube.
