What Jake said....seals go bad over time. If that's what it is, then chances are you didn't break it - it just wore out.

Depending on how much oil is on the clutch, it may or may not need to be replaced. I've seen them get some oil on them and end up being just fine after a cleanup and a little bit of driving....
