Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong:
The two point (tubular or boxed) style that don't attach in the center primarily increase the beam stiffness of the chassis with a secondary benefit being a slight increase in torsional stiffness.
Three point (diamond style) increase beam stiffness just like the 2 points but they offer a lot more in terms of torsional stiffness, making them more effective when the chassis tries to twist. However, they can get in the way of underbody components in some cases.
