GM has talked about acquiring other companies and setting up joint development with other companies for years and years. They speculate, internally, about what might pay off if they pursue limited, purpose-built joint ventures with other companies, all the time. This is no different.
Some reporter somewhere heard something and decided to make a mountain out of a mole hill. While an acquisition is always possible, I don't see this happening. Acquiring another large auto corporation wouldn't do much more than eliminate competition. GM has to find a formula for success that works beyond what they have now. Once they do that, they can apply that formula to other auto makers by acquiring them.
