Like these guys said, a 600-750 carb is plenty. The Rochester Q-jet is a great carb with the smaller primaries which will be a little better on gas if you drive without mashing the pedal all the time. A 650 would probably be perfect. My 396 is currently running a 750 and making around 425-450 hp so you probably won't need that much but it all depends on your combination.
