crankshaft position sensor

OK. I have an OBD1 Trouble Code 36 (24X Signal Circuit Error) - Faulty Circuit error from coil packs to module. The manual says to test the coils and ignition module. They say before i check the manual i should check the Crankshaft position sensors functionality. Here are the symptoms.

I will go out and start the car from a cold start. I will drive it around for a little and then go into a store or something and come out to start it and it cranks but wont start. Eventually I can get it to start. So my guess is that the CPS is heating up and not functioning correctly. Does this sound right?

Car is a 1995 3.4 V6. I have been reading around about the Distributor-Less Ignition System. My understanding is that the CPS sends a signal to the ignition module which adjusts the timing, etc. Is this correct? So if the CPS was bad it would cause a problem like this? My idle is pretty rough and the car is running rich.
