Unfortunately free=bad in most cases with computer software. There are exceptions though. It sounds like you either have a hardware problem as WildBilly mentioned (but it could be something else hardware related) or it could be some sort of adware or spyware that installed its self on your computer and snowballed and now your OS is infected out the wazoo. For free programs I recommend spybot-search & destroy, download
here from download.com, for $30 I recommend Spy sweeper. If you get spysweeper I wouldnt bother with ad-aware or zone alarm, but if you only go with spybot the others wont hurt. Also you can download Hijack this
here and save a log and post the log here and I can tell you some of the "bad" stuff to remove.
