i personally think without tips, an exhaust usually doesn't have as deep of a tone. mostly because tips are usually larger in diameter than the rest of the system i guess. its not a dramatic change, but if you strive to hear it, you will notice. i'd do it though. i'm gettin an slp loudmouth and will either go no tips, stocks if they fit, or cut the rear pipes down and have tips to keep the exhaust semi hidden and look decent. turn downs will give you a lot of reverb from the ground like when going through tunnels or under overpasses which is always fun.

if you are talking about taking the rear pipes out of the muffler, i think thats a bad idea. 1st i think there is a hanger on the d/s pipe.
2nd the heat will build up under the car when you aren't moving causing problems.
a side exit pipe would be sick if you have clearance for it. i'd personally have two tips side by side because its a necessity to me. i'm sure you will come up with something creative that looks good and functions well!
